Love this bike, I have the 2008 version. Only thing when getting this bike, I'd recommend the disc brakes. The rim brakes on it are good for what they are, but if you hit even a small amount of water, the brakes don't do much good anymore.

I had my hesitations about spending $500+ on a mountain bike, but those were quickly erased when I took my brand new Rockhopper out on the trail and my family's cheaper bikes started to fall apart. This thing is fast, smooth, extremely well built, and handled everything I threw at it with ease. Add in the lifetime warranty on the frame, and this bike is a winner all around. Get a more comfortable seat and become the envy of all your friends with this excellent bike!

This bike is actually the first Mtn Bike I have ever bought. Or atleast the most expensive one. But what can I say. I thought I wasted money until I finally got it out on the trail. Had a blast and look forward to just about every weekend. So far no problems. Great bike.

Bought this bike two weeks ago. It handles much better than my last bike which I paid much more for. Shifts very smoothly, is light and handles well. I bought a seat pad right off the bat so no problems there. Its a very wet, muddy summer here so the tires being kind of slick was apparent right off the bat. Well worth the money so far though.

I bought this bike a last week and have a great time riding it. for the price i paid it was worth every penny. The derailer is the only problem i have had with it, the bike has trouble shifting unless on flat at a steady pace.

            Comments:

Hi, my name is Scott. I am 35 years old, married with kids. I live in Pacific Grove, CA. The weather here is perfect 50-65 F degrees year round so I get to ride daily. Been riding mountain bikes regularly since 1987. This is my sixth mountain bike. When choosing a bike I have to go to at least the eight hundred dollar mark to find something that was what I wanted. I didn't want disc brakes, I wear them out way too fast. I have a 23" 2008 Rockhopper in yellow. I am 6' 4" and 350 lbs. I have set this bike up for off road touring. The bike loaded with me on it is around 400 lbs. The trailer with both kids in it is 95 lbs. All together I ride a 495 lb. rig up and down hills around the beach and through the forest. This bike does well with the weight. Solid frame. Great all around geometry and positioning. I changed out the pedals first for some platforms. The wheels seem to do pretty well. I know how to true wheels and have had to do that about four or five times. I know I will eventually have to get some better wheels. I prefer to enjoy scenery, not glance at it so I ride under 20 mph. Although I've had it up to 50 mph when I first got it and it stopped great in about 40 feet. Still have the same brake pads on it that it came with. Ihe V-brakes stop me well when I'm going down hill fully loaded in the rain no problem. And they last alot longer than the disc brakes on my last bike that wore out every two weeks. That was expensive! I put on front and rear racks with bags, took off the front derailluer/shifter and I just use a single front gear. I put on L-bend bar ends, a head light, kickstand, tiny black bell, 2.5" tires (2.3" max with front derailleur), some anodized colorful components including a bash guard on the crank just for my personal entertainment. But it really does keep the pant leg clean. Shocks are mushy for my weight but no problems no leaks and the lockout feature is great, it has a blow off valve so when you hit a big pot hole unannounced it enables the shocks momentarily then goes back to locked out. Nice touch! Stock saddle is great! The only problem I have had with this bike is the drive train is touchy so you have to make sure it is in tune every couple of rides. I only use wax for the lubricant and that helped alot. So I recommend a rear derailluer upgrade, rear cog upgrade, chain upgrade and then you should be able to ride a good distance without making any adjustments. SUMMARY: If you want a fun bike at a good price get this bike. I think its great. But don't jump ramps on it or take ten foot drops and expect it to last. If you know how to keep a bike in tune then you can keep these components. But if you need a low maintenence bike then upgrade the drivetrain asap, or get a $1200 bike.I had a thousand to spend on a new bike but this one is great. So I spent the extra money on the racks and goodies and tools and tires etc. But it does pretty well especially for a make shift mountain goat. I've been riding it for a year and a half and I give it two thumbs up. If disc brakes work well for you then I recommend a different bike, you can get more for that money in this wide open market.
